Dr. Rubina Suwal receives ASCO 2023 Conquer Cancer International Innovation Grant

Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center, Nepal and Binaytara Foundation, USA are proud to announce that Dr. Rubina Suwal, our head and neck onco-surgeon, has been awarded the 2023 Conquer Cancer International Innovation Grant from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Dr. Suwal’s research project titled “Effectiveness of a community screening program for early detection of oral cancers in Nepal” will be conducted over the next one year in Nepal.

Dr. Suwal’s research focuses on addressing the high incidence and mortality rates of oral cancers in Nepal. Early detection of oral cancer is crucial in improving survival rates, and Dr. Suwal’s study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based screening program in detecting oral cancers at an early stage in Nepal. The program will involve training community health workers to conduct oral cancer screenings and refer patients for further diagnosis and treatment.

“This grant will allow us to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based oral cancer screening program in Nepal, which has the potential to significantly improve outcomes for patients,” said Dr. Suwal. “Our ultimate goal is to develop a sustainable model for early detection and treatment of oral cancers in Nepal that can be replicated in other low-resource settings.”

The Conquer Cancer International Innovation Grant is awarded to researchers who propose innovative approaches to improving cancer care in low and middle-income countries. The grant is supported by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO and is intended to provide funding for novel projects that have the potential to transform cancer care in resource-limited settings.

“We are thrilled to see Dr. Suwal receive this prestigious grant from ASCO,” said Dr. Binay Shah, President of the Binaytara Foundation. “Her research has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of patients with oral cancer in Nepal and beyond. We are proud to support her work and look forward to the results of this important study.”

“Dr. Suwal’s research is key to improving the outcomes of oral cancer patients in Nepal and we are looking forward to seeing the results of this study. This screening model could be applied to other resource-poor areas and have an impact on communities around the world.” Added Dr. Siddhartha Yadav, Co-Chair of the Binaytara Foundation Education Academy.

The Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center is a cancer hospital in Janakpurdham, a city in southeast Nepal. It was established by the Binaytara Foundation in 2018 to meet the cancer care needs of more than six million residents of Madhesh Province (then province 2) who were forced to travel more than 8-hours by bus for cancer care at the nearest cancer hospital. The BTFCC provides cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care services.

The Binaytara Foundation is a global cancer non-profit dedicated to improving access to cancer care in the United States and abroad through education and innovative program models that break down barriers and advance best practices in hematology and oncology. Binaytara Foundation’s major projects include hematology and oncology conferences, and the establishment of a cancer hospital in Nepal.

Founded in 1964, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is the world’s leading professional organization for physicians and oncology professionals caring for people with cancer.

The Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center (BTFCC) has announced the dates for its 5th annual International Cancer Congress (ICC 2023), which will be held March 17-18, 2023.

The International Cancer Congress is an educational meeting intended to improve the care of cancer patients in South Asia by educating cancer care providers about the latest developments in the field of cancer, and their applications in the local context. This international oncology conference features renowned faculty from the United States and Nepal.

The BTFCC’s 4th International Cancer Congress was held on April 16, 2022. It featured a breast cancer session, several general oncology sessions, an abstract session, a keynote address on communication, and the award ceremony. Various national and international speakers presented their studies on key cancer topics. Physicians, MBBS practitioners, and paramedics in the field of cancer care attended the conference.

ICC 2022 was also an opportunity for BTFCC to recognize the skill, dedication, and hard work of several cancer care professionals. The Young Scientist award was presented to Dr. Nirajan Subedi from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for the abstract, “Post-Operative Pancreatitis as a Predictor of Post-Operative Pancreatic Fistula in Patients Following Pancreaticoduodenectomy in a University Hospital in Nepal.” Dr. Subedi also presented the paper.

Meanwhile, the Staff of the Year award was presented to Mrs. Ruchika Shrestha for her hard work and dedication to improving patient care. Mrs. Shrestha has been working with the BTFCC since its inception in December 2018. She communicates well with patients and their families to understand their socio-economic aspects while also making them feel comfortable emotionally, which strengthens the bond between patient and care professionals. She manages and teaches new nursing staff, contributing to better coordination.

Janakpurdham, Nepal, April 30, 2022 – The Binaytara Foundation Cancer Center (BTFCC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Subodh Mallik will be joining the center as Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO). Dr. Mallik will work to ensure implementation and adoption of Karexpert, an electronic health record (EHR) program that allows the BTFCC to be one of the few completely paperless hospitals in South Asia.

EHRs provide numerous benefits for patient care, including faster access to patient records, helping to reduce errors and improve safety, improving patient privacy and security, and a more efficient overall process.

“The EHR plays a vital role in any healthcare facility,” says Dr. Mallik. “A robust EHR and its full use is the foundation for comprehensive medical care, continuity of patient care, knowledge sharing, and research. My goal is to bring in a user-friendly and thorough EHR to our facility. It will be mastered by all and fully tested before the hospital moves into its new State of the Art building.”

The new system will be KareXpert, a fully-integrated digital healthcare system. It uses AI, a single data lake, and a managed services platform to improve patient care and allow physicians to assist more patients in less time.

Dr. Mallik is a proven physician leader who has held numerous healthcare leadership positions. He is a board-certified internal medicine physician and practices at a hospital in Fort Stockton, Texas, USA. As CMIO, he will work on engineering workflows and processes that maximize efficiency and lead to the highest quality of clinical care. Dr. Mallik will be supported by Dr. Rubina Suwal and Dr. Rahul Shah who will serve as his clinical associates.

I feel honored to lead the EHR implementation as Chief Medical Information Officer,” says Dr. Mallik. “It will allow me to share my US experience with the BTFCC, and fellow physicians and nurses, in my homeland of Nepal. I have accepted this position to fulfill my passion for full circle medical care, and to give back to my country. My sincere thanks to Binaytara Foundation.”
