Location and Accessibility

Janakpurdham is situated approximately 225 km (140 mi) southeast of Kathmandu, accessible by a quick 25-minute flight. Multiple flights operate daily between Kathmandu and Janakpur, making it convenient for visitors. Alternatively, Janakpurdham is easily reachable by road from various parts of Nepal.

Experience the Essence of Janakpur

As the capital city of Madhesh Province, Janakpurdham is renowned for its stunning Janaki Mandir, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita, the daughter of King Janak of the ancient Mithila Kingdom. The temple complex features the Vivah Mandap, a ceremonial stage adorned with idols of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, and their family members. This sacred site is believed to be the location where Lord Ram and Goddess Sita’s wedding ceremony was celebrated during the Treta Yuga.

Janakpur is often referred to as the “City of Temples and Lakes,” serving as a vibrant center for Mithila culture and the Maithili language. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the rich local traditions, savor authentic Mithila cuisine, and connect with the friendly people of Mithila.

Local Transportation and Attractions

While exploring Janakpur, consider taking a TukTuk for an authentic local transportation experience. This mode of travel allows you to discover the city’s unique charm and cultural diversity.

A must-visit landmark in Janakpur is the Janakpurdham Railway Station, the only railway station in Nepal, which adds an interesting dimension to the city’s historical and cultural landscape.
